The Impact of School Counselling: from One-to-one Support to Whole-school Change

For many young people, school can be overwhelming. Stress, anxiety, isolation, and the pressure of fitting in can quickly build up. Having someone to listen without judgement — and to offer tools that really work — can make all the difference.

At Doon Academy in East Ayrshire, pupils accessing The Exchange Child and Family Support Service described how life-changing it was to have a safe space to talk. One young person told us:

“During the stressful transition to secondary school and experiencing bullying, my counsellor provided the support I needed. I feel secure knowing she is there if I need to talk.”

That sense of being heard and understood doesn’t just change one life — it can change the whole school community.

Over the past year, pupils inspired by their counselling experience decided to take things further, setting up a peer drop-in group supported by The Exchange, the school guidance team, and SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health).

Every Friday afternoon, young people run the group themselves. It’s a welcoming space where pupils can drop in for a chat, to de-stress, or to share what’s on their minds. The group doesn’t replace professional counselling — but it provides a vital bridge, making it easier for pupils to open up and reducing the stigma around mental health.

“These young people, many of whom have faced incredibly difficult circumstances, are now thriving. And that’s the real success story.” - Jolene McRonald, The Exchange

This is what happens when counselling goes beyond a service. It sparks confidence, builds resilience, and inspires young people to support each other.
